In some circumstances, such as small claim cases, you may be allowed to serve a summons by mail. You may not need to have another person to serve the defendants. If granted, you can deliver the summons along with a copy of the complaint by certified mail. Be certain that it is restricted delivery, and has a return requested. Restricted delivery means that only the person listed on the summons will be able to sign. The return receipt resembles a green postcard that confirms that the post office has delivered the letter. Be sure to keep a record of the date the letter was sent and to whom. Also, remember to keep the green return receipt once received in the mail. It will prove to the court that you served the defendant and the case will proceed.
